Nerding it Up!

Thanks to Matt for passing this along to me. The Physics Factbook recently posted a study on the acceleration due to gravity in all of the Super Mario Bros. games. It's kind of hilarious that physicists are now examining the properties of make-believe worlds, but if any one deserves attention, it's definitely Mario's. The result of the study showed that as Mushroom Kingdom has progressed, the force of gravity has become less. In the first few games, the G force was so great that Mario would have lost consciousness. In the latest games for Game Cube and Wii however, the acceleration due to gravity is nearing a value similar to Earth's 9.8 m/s². Looks like all video games are becoming more realistic, except of course for Katamari, which will continue to defy logic and keep us entertained for years. Check the link for the full report.
