Notebook on Cities and Clothes

I've always been a fan of Wim Wenders; Wings of Desire is one of my favorite films of all time and Paris, Texas is fantastic. Harry Dean Stanton's performance in the latter is impecable by the way. Anyway, this film caught my eye at work the other day as I hadn't really heard much about it and I was pleasantly surprised.

Notebook on Cities and Clothes is a film documenting designer Yohji Yamamoto's creative process and comparing his method to Wender's own. The film explores notions of art in film and is especially concerned with the introduction of digital video in the late eighties. It looks at the concept of identity and how we relate ourselves to the clothes we wear and how the filmmaker identifies himself in his art. All in all, the flick was very interesting and quite entertaining. Another great film by Wenders. Give it a gander.

Speaking Up

Japanese Softbank Ad

This video isn't the greatest, but still worth a peek. Brad Pitt and Wes Anderson teamed up to make a commercial for Softbank, but the ad has aired only in Japan. I believe it came out in December, but has been taken down off youtube and various other sites. AOL still has it up though. Take a look.

More Obama Mayhem!

First e-mail in the Oval Office and now this. It's the little things that matter I believe.

The whole world is broke

The World Economic Forum began their annual meeting in Switzerland today and will meet until February 1st to discuss the current global economic crisis. Over the past few months I've had multiple friends touched by the recession and can also see the effects at my own job. I don't know about you, but I'm extremely concerned about how we're going to turn everything around and I'm following this meeting with extreme interest. Check out their website for session updates to stay informed.

Welcoming America to the 21st Century

Barack Obama will be the first US President to use email; and all because he refuses to give up his Blackberry. Changes are a comin'.

Nerding it Up!

Thanks to Matt for passing this along to me. The Physics Factbook recently posted a study on the acceleration due to gravity in all of the Super Mario Bros. games. It's kind of hilarious that physicists are now examining the properties of make-believe worlds, but if any one deserves attention, it's definitely Mario's. The result of the study showed that as Mushroom Kingdom has progressed, the force of gravity has become less. In the first few games, the G force was so great that Mario would have lost consciousness. In the latest games for Game Cube and Wii however, the acceleration due to gravity is nearing a value similar to Earth's 9.8 m/s². Looks like all video games are becoming more realistic, except of course for Katamari, which will continue to defy logic and keep us entertained for years. Check the link for the full report.

Boredom Leads to This

Winter breeds this stale sense of boredom that I've been trying to shake for the last little while. Working retail in the month of January is no help; I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about. So I'm asking for help starting a new blog dedicated to whatever tickles ones fancy.

I'll start it off by mentioning RRL's recently opened store on Melrose in LA. After seeing pics in the latest issue of Huge, I had to share the beauty with all my friends. Maybe it's because my father collects antique gas station memorabilia, but I think the use of an old, dilapidated garage as the location for a high-end boutique is a fantastic idea. There was a short article recently on Racked LA that offered shots of the new store, and I've posted one of the full exterior so you can get an idea of the vibe they're going for. Click on the link for more.

Maybe it's because I have to move soon, but I've been looking at tons of interesting uses of space lately. This photo by Andrew Bush has had me in awe for days.

House

The pic is from a series he did focusing on a house situated in Ireland. I really like his shit, but this and the series "Drive", in which he took photos of moving vehicles while driving along beside them, are probably my favorites. Check his website, andrewbush.net, for more of his stuff.

OK, that's my first post. Don't forget to give me a shout if you're interested in pitching in some randomness.
